Sarah, we usually see you up front on Sunday mornings leading the actions with great enthusiasm, tell us how you first got involved at The Point
I was brought up in a Christian family (my dad’s a Methodist minister) and gave my life to the Lord when I was young. We moved around quite a bit with my dad’s job and when I was 12 we arrived in Hurst. It was quite a hard transition for me because the church was quite different from what I was used to, especially the amount of people my own age! To be honest I let my relationship with God slip a bit, as none of my friends shared in my beliefs and I wanted to fit in with them. Over the years I became involved in youth groups connected to other churches, which were fantastic and definitely helped me get back on track, but I was never fully involved in just one particular church. I came to The Point in May 2005, met friendly, welcoming people with a heart for God and fell in love with it.
Most people in the church know you as Action Woman, where did you
learn all the actions to the songs and how do you remember them
Action Woman…I like it! Some of them I learnt from children’s clubs I’ve helped at, some of them the actions team and I made up and some of them Will taught me! I don’t really know how I remember them; I don’t have any special tricks! I find it easy to memorise song lyrics and tunes so I suppose that helps. I guess I have an action memory.
Is it true Will refuses to leave the actions team ?
No! In fact I believe he’s going to be stepping down from the role very soon. And now I’ve said that he has no choice!
You are taking a year out to work with the Church, what's that like
and what do you do ?
It’s so much fun, I love it! I’m mainly involved in the children’s work but also help at Subway (youth group for years 7-9), do some admin stuff and volunteer for Off The Fence’s ‘Antifreeze’ project, going into Brighton to give food & drink to the homeless and chat with them. I also have training from the diocese and am involved in some diocesan events. Plus I’m going to India for two weeks in March with Tearfund which I’m really excited about! I think the most challenging thing about the year has been being away from my family, as they moved to Leicestershire in August, but I’m surrounded by amazing, lovely people who’ve been looking after me. It’s great.
What will you do after your year out ?
Good question! I’ve got a place at Kings College London to study Theology but I don’t think that it’s the course I should be doing. I’d love to go to uni, but at the moment I’m really seeking God, trying to find out what he wants me to do.
Do you drink Red Bull, and if not, where do you get all your energy
from ?
Haha no, I can’t stand Red Bull!! I’ve always had quite a lot of energy but when I get excited about something God gives me even more! Worshipping God whole-heartedly & enthusiastically is something I really love and have a passion for - he deserves our everything!
Finally, will you be making any New Year resolutions ?
I don’t think so, they never work! But if I did, it would probably be to get up earlier and stop being late for everything!
